Friday Hike Day: Millard Canyon Falls

Fighting that cabin fever...the uncool moms (one fighting bronchitis) took all the kool kids for a very brief 'hike' (aka nature walk for anyone over 3yo) ala' Millard Canyon Falls.

Super family and beginner friendly hike. Adventure pass required. Vault toilets...those are always hit or miss but they were surprisingly clean when we went this time.

There are 6 walk up camp sites, 1st come 1st served: FREE minus Adventure Parking pass. Great little spot. There is a day-use area near the parking lot with picnic tables.

GPS will take you to the lot at the top, there is less parking there. Follow the road LEFT, all the way down to start closer to the trailhead. IMO this is *safer*, especially if you have little ones because you won't have to walk down (or back up) the winding road. Of course this makes the 'hike' shorter. I believe its less than 2 miles round trip.

Oh my word, how great it felt to be back on the trails twice in a week.

It's a simple trail. Adventure Pass (parking) required. Vault toilets at the campsite/trail head. This is actually a FREE, first come, first serve campsite. Just have your parking pass viewable in your car, walk pass the day use area and you will find space to camp near the bathrooms...only about a 5 min walk from the parking lot. There are fire rings but be aware of current fire restrictions. GPS may take you to a lot at the TOP of the hill...continue to y our LEFT down the road to a lower lot. This is easier and IMO safer, especially with children. The hike is very short, less than 2 miles round trip unless you are starting from the top lot.

The trail is lightly maintained and fairly easy to follow. Depending on water flow and levels of the season, there will be numerous creek crossings. The falls were still flowing today though less than the rainy season and spring.

I consider this a very family and kid friendly hike. Great for beginners of all ages.

I had a great time getting back out in nature again. This really is my happy place. I have missed the serenity and solace hiking has offered and been for me, this year. I know I won't be able to go on weekdays while I continue and finish school but hopefully I can fit in weekends. I have made a commitment to myself to register for at least 1 group hike a month with GIRLS WHO HIKE LA. Though my heart's desire is to hike regularly, at least once a week, I have to be realistic right now. Last semester was so much more challenging than I expected and took up so much of my time and mental energy.

I can't expect this semester to be any different!
